What is pH?

We’ve all touched on the pH scale in middle school science classes, but how much do you really know about it?

It’s simple: when you see a reference to acid or alkali content, you see a number that refers to this scale. The pH scale ranges from a score of 0 to 14. 7 being the middle number is neutral, as it is neither acidic nor alkaline. The lower the number, the higher the acidity. The higher the number, the more alkaline the substance is.

This is where it gets a little trickier: each whole number represents a factor of 10. So, something that is pH 4 is TEN TIMES more acidic than something that is pH 5. Lemon juice at pH 2 is not twice as acidic as tomato juice at pH 4: but 100 times as acidic!

So what’s the deal with acidity levels? Why does it all matter?

Mineral assimilation within the body is affected by pH levels. Minerals have their own pH levels at which they can be absorbed into the body. Minerals at the lower end of the atomic scale can be assimilated at a wider pH range; minerals on the higher end can only be assimilated on a very narrow pH range. Minerals that are not assimilated at the correct range cannot be absorbed. This occurs with a number of common minerals:

  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Manganese
  • Iron
  • Zinc
  • Copper
  • Iodine

Why is this even important? Well, our bodies need these essential minerals to function. For example, Iodine requires a near perfect pH level to be fully absorbed by the body. We need Iodine to ensure proper thyroid function; however, without a near-perfect pH balance, the thyroid cannot absorb it.

Still having doubts? Let’s look at how water acidity affects your body. Municipal water is a standard pH7 (neutral): this is because additives are put into the water to achieve this. Your intestine sits at an alkaline level of 9. Your blood is alkaline 7.4. Doctors and scientists say that the beneficial healthy PH range for water is around 8.5 to 9.

Pure rainwater, mixed in with pollutants from the air and run-off, has become as low as 5.8.

Our surrounding environment is slowly becoming more acidic, and with it, our water: as we consume this water, our bodies are slowly becoming more and more acidic and unhealthy. Even the bottled water from big name brands is tested as having unsafe levels of acidity.

It’s scary, right? This is where we step in. Our energised water systems are specially designed to regulate the pH level in water to make it clean, alkaline-friendly, and healthy for your body.
